The Master would accept monetary gifts from only his closest or proven disciples. New people would offer him money, but he would refuse it. (1) Someone sent a check to Cannes made out to Meher Baba. Baba endorsed it on the back as M. S. Irani, but the branch of the Bank of Marseilles refused to cash it until it was endorsed by “Meher Baba.” Therefore, on August 26th (1937) at Capo di Monte, Baba had Chanji hold the fountain pen and Baba then held Chanji’s hand and guided it to write his signature as Meher Baba. Accompanied by Norina and Chanji, Baba was driven by Hedi Mertens to the Cooks Travel office and the check was cashed. This was the first and last time he ever signed his name as Meher Baba.
(1) Meher Baba had once explained to Adi K. Irani that he did not take money from certain persons because of the sanskaras of greed, lust and other forces that went to obtain that money. In other words, the sanskaras that went into obtaining the money would come along with that money when given.
