Allan Cohen was destined to be connected with Ivy O. Duce and to join Sufism Reoriented and lecture about Meher Baba in America and Europe. Since giving up LSD and other such drugs and becoming interested in following Baba, Cohen had been corresponding with Adi K. Irani, Baba’s public secretary. This letter from Adi should prove to be of interest:
May 15th, 1965
Dear Brother Allan,
I have received your letter of May 9th this morning and here I am to say something about it. Do not for a moment endeavor to cogitate on your ego-mind. Just try to be natural. Baba wants us to be natural and pure like a grownup child – not suppressing thoughts nor trying to cure them of their evil nature. Instead take up a positive side of life which is full of love and goodwill for oneself and others. Baba has enlightened us through literature which we should study thoroughly and make it into a positive side of our life. Spiritual understanding given by Baba should not only be confined to the head. It should become a part and parcel of our life. It should get us a conviction by which it becomes a criteria to look at things in life and act accordingly.
Baba is more interested in the life of love and unselfishness we lead than what views and opinions we hold about things. It is better to study no understanding of spirituality than get a wrong understanding. Baba has simplified spirituality to the minimum. Love, faith, and service are the positive aspects.
A personage like Baba alone can give us a correct and comprehensive understanding about God and the way of life to realize Him. No yogi, rishi, muni or a spiritually advanced person can impart full comprehensive understanding. Their expositions could be partial and one sided. For instance, life is not meant to gain powers. On the other hand they act as impediments on the path, and one should always keep aloof and uninfluenced by them. Powers never solve the problem of life but add greater problems.
